The undefeated 49ers secured a hard-fought victory, but the Commanders' season was further complicated by a severe injury to their star wide receiver.

San Francisco 49ers Edge Commanders 23-17 Amidst Significant Washington Injury Concerns

The San Francisco 49ers maintained their perfect season record on Monday night, fending off a late-game surge from the Washington Commanders to secure a 23-17 victory. However, the outcome for the Commanders at Levi's Stadium was overshadowed by significant injury concerns that continue to plague their roster.

McLaurin Suffers Serious Knee Injury

In a major blow for Washington, star wide receiver Terry McLaurin was forced to exit the game in the first half after sustaining an apparent left knee injury. The incident occurred without any contact, leading to McLaurin being carted off the field. Both teammates and opposing 49ers players knelt in concern as he departed. At the time of his injury, the Commanders were trailing 13-3, a deficit that widened to 20-3 by halftime following a touchdown pass from Brock Purdy to George Kittle and two rushing scores by Christian McCaffrey.

This injury compounds a challenging season for Washington, who currently sit at the bottom of the NFC with a 1-5 record. The team has been striving to recover from a critical clock-management misstep by quarterback Jayden Daniels in Week 5.

Prior to kickoff, McLaurin, widely recognized as a pivotal leader within the Washington locker room, shared his perspective with the broadcast crew regarding the team's difficult period.

I've just been telling our guys we're going through the fire right now. You want to get to something, you gotta go through it. You can't go around it.

McLaurin had been Washington's most productive receiver before Monday's game, accumulating 14 receptions for 203 yards and one touchdown. Since entering the league in 2019, he has consistently been the team's most reliable receiving option. The two-time Pro Bowler is known for his ability to make contested catches, which contributed to him achieving five consecutive 1,000-yard seasons between 2020 and 2024, despite a revolving door of quarterbacks. His 2025 campaign was curtailed to 10 games due to various injuries.

Additional Injuries and Game Dynamics

San Francisco also experienced an injury setback before halftime. Wide receiver Mike Evans left the contest with less than a minute remaining in the second quarter. Evans headed to the locker room after making a 16-yard reception, having already tallied three catches for 94 yards.

Despite losing his primary target, Jayden Daniels mounted a significant rally in the second half. He connected for touchdown passes with Stefon Diggs and Rachaad White, narrowing the 49ers' lead to 23-17. However, San Francisco's defense ultimately held strong on Washington's final offensive possession, preserving their win.

Washington's offensive depth now faces further scrutiny. While Diggs managed to reach the end zone late in the game, the veteran receiver endured several hard hits from the 49ers' defense earlier. These new concerns come after the team already lost star offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil for the season due to a triceps injury.
