After extensive anticipation, the starting grid for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix has been set, with four-time series champion Alex Palou earning the coveted pole position. This race, which could be its inaugural and only running, presents Palou with a prime opportunity to secure his fifth career IndyCar title.
Drivers spent an intriguing practice day familiarizing themselves with the demanding, seven-corner Freedom 250 Grand Prix Circuit laid out through the streets of Washington, D.C. Following practice, competitors switched to red alternate Firestone tires for the high-speed qualifying runs.
Qualifying Rounds See Incidents and Surprises
The initial qualifying group featured several top contenders, and a number of drivers encountered difficulties, making contact with the wall. Among those who clipped the barriers were Marcus Ericsson, Rinus VeeKay, and Will Power.
A notable upset occurred when Ed Carpenter Racing’s Alexander Rossi, who had shown strong pace throughout the day, made an unexpected early exit from qualifying.
Andretti Global’s Kyle Kirkwood ultimately led this group with a lap time of 56.773 seconds. He was closely followed by Meyer Shank Racing’s Marcus Armstrong and Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou. Palou enters the event with a chance to clinch his fifth IndyCar championship if he can establish a 163-point lead in the standings by the race's conclusion in the District of Columbia.
Interestingly, Team Penske’s David Malukas recorded the fastest overall time in his group, but it would not have been quick enough to advance to the second round had he been placed in the first qualifying session.
Scott Dixon appeared poised to top his group, but his Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Kyffin Simpson brought out a red flag, which subsequently invalidated Dixon’s quick lap.
The Fast 6 and Palou's Pole-Winning Lap
In the second qualifying round, Kirkwood again set the pace with a 56.829-second lap, advancing to the Fast 6 alongside Scott McLaughlin, Alex Palou, David Malukas, and Christian Rasmussen, who delivered a particularly strong performance. Marcus Armstrong also progressed despite making contact with the wall exiting Turn 7 on his fastest lap.
All six drivers in the Fast 6 opted for the red alternate tires for the single-car qualifying session. Kirkwood’s team elected to send him out first. The Jupiter, Florida, native experienced a slight moment entering Turn 1 during his run but maintained control to complete the lap, posting a 57.466, a time considerably slower than his earlier efforts.
Next on track was Alex Palou. He pushed his car to the absolute limit into the first corner, demonstrating remarkable control, and delivered a blistering 56.899-second lap, surpassing Kirkwood’s time by four-tenths of a second. This impressive lap proved to be unassailable.
Palou will start from pole position in Sunday’s race, with Kirkwood lining up alongside him in second place. Row 2 will feature McLaughlin and Rasmussen, setting the stage for an intense competition. The grueling 250-mile race around the iconic National Mall circuit will determine the victor and potentially, the championship outcome.
