Outrage Erupts in Ceuta After Video Shows Dolphin Beaten During Beach Celebration

A recent video circulating online has ignited widespread indignation in Ceuta, the Spanish enclave in North Africa, after it appeared to show a group of individuals mistreating a young dolphin during what seemed to be a celebratory gathering.

The footage depicts several men and boys lifting a marine mammal, identified as a possible baby bottlenose dolphin calf, triumphantly above their heads. Onlookers can be heard cheering enthusiastically. The incident reportedly began when the dolphin swam close to the shore of El Trampolin beach, prompting a group of men to allegedly pull it from the water.

The actions captured in the video reportedly provoked a strong reaction from local residents, some of whom attempted to intervene and stop the group during a confrontation. It was during this event that one individual allegedly struck the dolphin with a stick, inflicting what is believed to be a fatal injury. While some voices in the video can be heard shouting "no," others were heard cheering. A visible concern for the marine mammal's welfare was also apparent among some bystanders.

Eventually, the dolphin was taken and returned to the water. The entire episode has generated considerable outrage within the Ceuta community.

Public Outcry and Calls for Accountability

Nadia Garcia Gomez initiated a social media petition calling for the arrest of those involved. In her post, she described the event, stating: "On Wednesday, September 2, 2026, a disoriented dolphin calf swimming near the shore at Trampolin Beach, in Ceuta, was brutally pulled from the water."

Gomez further elaborated, stating that "Eyewitnesses and local media reported that the animal was handled as if it were an object and violently struck on the head with a stick, causing its immediate death." She characterized the actions of the individuals as an "extreme and unjustifiable cruelty" that demands legal repercussions, emphasizing that dolphins are a protected species under both Spanish and European legislation.

Other residents of Ceuta have publicly demanded that the individuals implicated in the incident face prosecution and be expelled from the country.

Ceuta's Broader Migrant Challenges

This incident occurs amidst ongoing tensions in Ceuta, which has experienced a significant influx of migrants from neighboring Morocco. In July, the small enclave's border defenses were overwhelmed by more than 70,000 migrants. While a majority of these individuals subsequently returned to their home country, thousands have remained in Ceuta.

The situation has led some local residents to advocate for increased deportations and more decisive measures from the central government in Madrid. Recent weeks have seen demonstrations of this frustration, including angry locals dismantling migrant tents and temporary shelters on the beach.
