The Cleveland Guardians delivered a powerful late-game performance on Monday night, overwhelming the Tampa Bay Rays' bullpen with five runs in the final two frames to claim a 7-3 triumph in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series in St. Petersburg.
Early Advantage for Tampa Bay
Tampa Bay initially seized the lead. In the bottom of the first inning, with two outs recorded, Junior Caminero and Jonny DeLuca each delivered consecutive RBI hits, putting the Rays ahead 2-0. Starting pitcher Drew Rasmussen maintained this advantage effectively through five innings, recording seven strikeouts.
Cleveland finally managed to break through against Rasmussen in the sixth inning when Chase DeLauter connected with a fastball, sending an opposite-field solo home run over the right-center wall.
The Guardians then drew even in the top of the seventh. Patrick Bailey led off the inning by launching a solo blast down the right-field line, knotting the score at 2-2 and concluding Rasmussen's outing.
Guardians Explode Late to Secure Victory
Cleveland continued to press their advantage in the eighth inning, facing Rays relievers Tyler Wells and Ian Seymour. Jose Ramirez initiated the rally with a hustling infield single. DeLauter followed with a double down the line, setting the stage for Nathaniel Lowe, who laced a crucial two-run single to give the Guardians a 4-2 lead.
Tampa Bay attempted to rally in the bottom of the eighth. Pinch-hitter Cedric Mullins greeted Erik Sabrowski with a solo home run to right field, narrowing Cleveland's lead to 4-3.
However, Jose Ramirez delivered a decisive blow in the ninth. Capping an impressive 3-for-5 night that included two runs scored, Cleveland's veteran third baseman stepped to the plate with two outs and lined an RBI single into right field off Cole Sulser, extending the lead to 5-3. After Sulser issued a walk to DeLauter, Kevin Kelly entered the game. Jo Adell, a mid-season acquisition, rose to the occasion, ripping a two-run double down the third-base line, effectively putting the game out of reach at 7-3.
The Guardians amassed 14 hits against six different Tampa Bay pitchers. Ramirez and DeLauter were particularly impactful, combining for six hits between them. Cade Smith then efficiently closed out the game with just six pitches.
The Rays entered Monday's contest with significant momentum, having swept the Yankees in their previous series. However, the Game 1 loss now places considerable pressure on the team. Game 2 is scheduled for Tuesday night at Tropicana Field.
