Craig Carton Decries "Cancel Culture" After Blazers Rescind Announcer Offer Over Decade-Old Tweets

The Portland Trail Blazers recently withdrew a job offer to their prospective play-by-play announcer, Braiden Bell, following the emergence of controversial social media content he posted as a teenager. This development has reignited discussions surrounding accountability for past online conduct and its impact on professional opportunities.

Incident Prompts Public Discourse

Bell was slated to join the Blazers' broadcasting team when Devon Haskins, a reporter based in Portland, uncovered several posts from Bell's Twitter account dating back to 2012 and 2013. These tweets were described as "racist and misogynist" and, while acknowledged to be in poor taste, were made when Bell was approximately 14 years old.

A Media Veteran's Strong Stance

Veteran media personality Craig Carton shared his strong disapproval of the situation, expressing concern over the implications of such discoveries.

"This kid just got the job of his lifetime," Carton stated, visibly frustrated. "And the first thing an 'investigative reporter' wants to do is see if (he) can find some dirt on the kid."

Carton emphasized that while he did not condone the content of Bell's posts, it was crucial to consider the age at which they were made. He highlighted that many individuals might have expressed insensitive or ill-considered thoughts during their adolescent years.

"I'm not excusing what he wrote. I understand you finding it offensive, but he didn't write it as a mature adult," Carton explained. "He wrote it as a 14 year old. Are we really going to make decisions now and not allowing people to get jobs? Because when they were in high school, they put out a tweet that their friends might have found funny, and now it's going to impact this guy for the rest of his life."

The Lasting Impact of Teenage Posts

The incident, according to Carton, exemplifies a problematic trend where past youthful indiscretions online can have severe, lasting professional repercussions. He questioned the motive behind unearthing such old posts, suggesting the primary outcome is the loss of a significant career opportunity for a young individual.

Essential Advice for Aspiring Professionals

Drawing from his own experience in media, Carton offered a critical piece of advice for anyone aiming for a career in broadcasting or public roles: thoroughly review and clean up their social media presence.

"Before you apply for a job... clean out the Twitter account, clean out the Instagram," he urged. "Because you don't even remember the dumb s–t you said and posted when you were a child."

Carton concluded by noting that Braiden Bell is now facing the harsh reality of these consequences.
