New York Congressional Candidate Faces Renewed Scrutiny Over Deleted Posts Praising Communism
Socialist congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier draws criticism over deleted social media posts praising communism and Marxist principles.
Politics·

New York congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier, a socialist, is under renewed scrutiny following the emergence of a deleted social media account containing posts that expressed admiration for communism, Marxist ideology, and prominent Soviet figures.
Ms. Avila Chevalier, whose campaign has received endorsements from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), previously managed a Twitter account under the handle "Darializabonet." This account was removed in June 2022. Reports indicate that the deleted posts included references to Karl Marx as a "must read" author, lamented a perceived scarcity of Marxist texts in libraries, and featured a quotation from Assata Shakur, who was convicted of murder.
I just cannot get over the fact that the universe has foisted upon us the perfect illustration of literally every failing of capitalism and people are still like we can’t be communists cuz there won’t be enough types of soup,
one retweeted post from the account stated.
Past Social Media Activity Resurfaces
This latest controversy follows prior criticism directed at Ms. Avila Chevalier concerning other deleted posts, which reportedly advocated for the abolition of police forces and described her action of wiping her hands on an American flag. The recent revelations have drawn widespread condemnation from both conservative and moderate commentators across digital platforms and broadcast media.
Condemnation from Across the Political Spectrum
Eyal Yakoby, a student at the University of Pennsylvania, remarked on X, "It cannot be overstated just how radical Darializa Avila Chevalier is."
Political commentator Scott Jennings observed on X, "Funny, I was told repeatedly on live TV that socialism and communism are totally different and in no way, shape, or form are these Democratic Socialists the same as communists."
Reality television personality and former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt posted on X, drawing a comparison: "‘Democratic Socialist’ is to the Communist what ‘National Socialist’ was to the Nazi."
Senator Tim Sheehy, a Republican, asserted on X, "The enemy is inside the gates." He further elaborated, "Socialism/communism have killed more people than every other -’ism’ combined. Add in radical Islamism and you have an apocalyptic combination." Sheehy concluded by describing these individuals as "the vanguard of an America-hating wave of progressive lunatics."
Primary Victory and General Election Outlook
Despite the controversies surrounding her past statements and perceived anti-American rhetoric, Ms. Avila Chevalier secured a victory in the Democratic primary for New York's 13th Congressional District on Tuesday, defeating incumbent Democratic Representative Adriano Espaillat. Given the district's strong Democratic leaning in one of the nation's most reliably Democratic urban centers, she is broadly anticipated to prevail against her Republican challenger in the general election scheduled for November.
