Denver Man Found Deceased at Bottom of Black Canyon, Gunnison National Park
Authorities located the body of a 57-year-old Denver resident following the discovery of an abandoned vehicle near steep drop-offs at the national park.
U.S.·

Authorities in Colorado confirmed last week that a Denver man was found deceased at the base of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The discovery came after Montrose County deputies located an abandoned vehicle in the vicinity of the park.
The individual was identified as John N. Countryman, 57, of Denver. His body was located on the floor of the park's Black Canyon, an area known for its challenging terrain, including trails that traverse along sheer 2,000-foot drop-offs and restricted access to the inner canyon.
Search Initiated After Vehicle Discovery
The Montrose County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) initially received notification on October 27, around 5:30 p.m., regarding an unoccupied vehicle parked near mile marker 10 along the South Rim of Black Canyon. Further investigation revealed personal effects in the vicinity of Devil's Lookout, a prominent and exceptionally steep vantage point within the park.
In response to these findings, the sheriff's office deployed its drone team to conduct a search of the canyon, operating under the assumption of a potential missing person linked to the abandoned vehicle. Despite their efforts, the team was unable to locate anyone before nightfall due to rapidly fading daylight.
The search resumed early the following morning. Approximately 6:30 a.m. on October 28, the drone team successfully identified and confirmed the presence of human remains on the canyon floor.
Recovery and Ongoing Inquiry
Countryman's body was subsequently recovered two days after its discovery. Following the recovery operation, the remains were transported to the Montrose County Coroner's Office for further examination.
The official cause and manner of death are currently under investigation by authorities.
Challenging Terrain of Black Canyon
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, situated in western Colorado, is characterized by its dramatic and rugged landscape. The park is renowned for its deep, narrow gorges meticulously carved by the Gunnison River, presenting visitors with breathtaking yet formidable drop-offs and demanding terrain. These geographical features often render search and rescue efforts particularly complex and arduous.
