DHS Seeks Custody of Man Charged with Murder After Deportation, Illegal Re-entry, and Subsequent Release
Federal authorities are seeking to take custody of a Bangladeshi national accused of first-degree murder, who was previously deported and later released into the U.S. after an alleged illegal re-entry.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has formally requested that Florida authorities transfer custody of a Bangladeshi national, who is currently facing a murder charge, into federal immigration enforcement hands. This request follows a complex immigration history for the individual, which includes a deportation during the first Trump administration and a subsequent release into the United States by the Biden administration after an alleged illegal re-entry.
Immigration History of the Accused
According to information provided by DHS, the individual, identified as Miah, initially entered the United States in 2016 while the Obama administration was in office. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) apprehended him in February 2018. Later that same year, an immigration judge issued a definitive order for his removal from the country.
Miah was deported to Bangladesh in January 2019, during the first term of the Trump administration. However, officials assert that he unlawfully re-entered the U.S. — an act classified as a federal felony. He was subsequently released into the country by the Biden administration on March 19, 2022.
Murder Allegations and Investigation
DHS stated that ICE lodged a detainer, which is a request for Florida officials to transfer Miah into federal custody after the conclusion of his state criminal proceedings. This action is intended to ensure he faces immigration enforcement measures following any sentence he may receive in connection with the murder case.
Authorities report that Monica Islam, the sister-in-law of Miah, vanished on May 2, 2025, after leaving the Eustis convenience store where she was employed alongside him. Hours later, her body was discovered with a gunshot wound beside a road in Mount Dora.
Prosecutors revealed that investigators recovered Monica Islam's DNA from Miah's vehicle. Furthermore, a bullet was found lodged in the passenger-side door, and evidence suggested the passenger window had been shattered.
Officials contend that Miah fled to New York following the alleged killing. He was later apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Service and extradited back to Florida, where he is now facing a charge of first-degree murder.
State Attorney Bill Gladson indicated that investigators uncovered evidence showing Miah conducted numerous suspicious internet searches on the morning of the alleged murder. Prosecutors also allege that he rented a vehicle and drove to New York after the incident, before law enforcement agencies — through a collaborative effort involving local, state, and federal entities — successfully tracked him down.
