Florida Driver Accused of Fleeing Police, Colliding with School Bus Carrying 19 Children

A driver in Florida, reportedly attempting to evade a traffic stop, collided head-on with a school bus transporting 19 children before abandoning his damaged vehicle and fleeing on foot, according to local authorities. Despite the dramatic incident, all children aboard the bus were confirmed to be safe and uninjured.

The event, which unfolded on a Tuesday morning, was extensively recorded, including footage of the vehicle striking the Sumter County school bus and body camera video from a deputy showing the pursuit and apprehension of the suspect.

Incident Unfolds During Morning Commute

The sequence of events began around 7:20 a.m. when a deputy, engaged in traffic enforcement within a school zone near The Villages Intermediate Center, observed 23-year-old Qahiem Williams. Williams was allegedly traveling 17 mph over the posted speed limit on County Road 466, close to Tatonka Terrace.

The Sumter County Sheriff's Office reported that the deputy executed a U-turn and activated emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop. However, Williams reportedly accelerated, proceeding to sideswipe two vehicles at an approaching traffic light.

Investigators stated that these initial collisions compromised the axle of Williams' vehicle, leading directly to a head-on impact with a Sumter County school bus on County Road 103. Video footage captured from inside the bus visibly depicts the collision, with the driver's side door of Williams' vehicle appearing to open just moments before impact.

Suspect Apprehended After Foot Chase

Following the collision, Williams allegedly exited his vehicle and fled the scene on foot. Body camera footage shows a deputy pursuing Williams, eventually apprehending him in the vicinity of a Walmart store.

Williams was taken into custody and is now facing numerous charges. These include fleeing or eluding law enforcement, driving with a suspended license, possession of marijuana, leaving the scene of a crash, resisting an officer, hit-and-run, and a moving traffic violation. Furthermore, the Sumter County Sheriff's Office website indicates that Williams had two existing Sumter County warrants for previous instances of fleeing or eluding and driving with a suspended license.

"I have zero tolerance when it comes to actions that put our children's lives in danger," Sumter County Sheriff Patrick Breeden stated. "This suspect has a history of this type of behavior and our community is safer with him off our streets."

After being medically cleared, Williams was transported to the Sumter County Detention Center, where he is currently being held without bond, according to authorities.
