The initial optimism surrounding the New York Giants in the nascent stages of the NFL season has been tempered by concerns over the health of starting quarterback Jaxson Dart, who is currently undergoing evaluation for a knee injury.
Dart, in his second professional season, suffered an injury to his left knee during the very first series of the Monday Night Football matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.
The incident occurred in the opening quarter when Dart was simultaneously hit by Rams defenders both high and low. The lower contact appeared to cause his left knee to bend in an unnatural direction.
Adding to the team's worries, wide receiver Malik Nabers briefly exited the game after an incomplete pass. He was observed clutching his right shoulder on the sideline.
Both players were officially listed as questionable to return; however, Dart’s return to the game was deemed highly improbable.
Nabers did eventually re-enter the contest after missing just one series while receiving attention for his shoulder.
Early Game Injury for Dart
The impact on Dart left the quarterback on the ground, visibly holding the knee of his lead leg, which he uses for throwing—a sight that often signals a significant issue.
A potential mitigating factor in the severity of the injury is that Dart’s leg was not firmly planted on the turf at the moment of impact. This allowed his entire lower leg to absorb the force and bend along with the knee.
Consequently, the probability of a season-ending ACL tear is not considered exceptionally high.
Evaluating the Extent of the Injury
Nevertheless, there is speculation, according to an NFL source, that Dart may have sustained some form of MCL injury. If this diagnosis is confirmed, Dart would likely avoid surgery but would still be sidelined for a period.
After the play, Dart limped off the field and initially received treatment inside the team’s medical tent. Several teammates gathered anxiously outside the tent, undoubtedly concerned about their starting quarterback’s condition.
Dart was subsequently escorted to the locker room, managing to walk under his own power, albeit with a noticeable limp.
In Dart’s absence, backup quarterback Jameis Winston took over the offensive duties.
