Tragedy Strikes Greek Air Show as Fighter Jet Crashes During Maneuver, Killing Two Pilots

A planned aerial display at the annual Athens Flying Week in Tanagra, Greece, ended in tragedy on Saturday when a Hellenic Air Force fighter jet crashed, killing two pilots. Thousands of attendees watched as the twin-seat F-4 Phantom jet impacted the ground at Tanagra Air Force Base, north of Athens.

The incident occurred during a low-altitude maneuver, mere meters above the terrain. Upon impact, the aircraft erupted in flames, sending a significant plume of black smoke skyward. Eyewitness video footage reportedly showed a secondary explosion nearby as the plane disintegrated.

Emergency services quickly responded, with 85 firefighters supported by 11 water-dropping planes and helicopters working to control the ensuing blaze. The remains of the two pilots were later recovered from the crash site.

"We were all stunned. It hadn't been airborne for more than three minutes," an eyewitness recounted to ERT, Greece’s state-owned broadcaster.

Official Reactions and Aftermath

Following the catastrophic event, organizers promptly canceled all remaining activities for Athens Flying Week and evacuated the area.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed profound sorrow over the loss. "The sense of grief is widespread, and our thoughts are with the families of the two pilots we lost," Mitsotakis stated. He added that the incident serves as "a reminder of the daily danger faced by Greece’s aviators, who remain on constant standby to protect Greece's skies."

In solidarity, Cyprus' Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas extended his condolences. "It is with deep sadness that I learned of the death of the two officers of the Hellenic Air Force, who lost their lives in the tragic accident that occurred during the air show at Tanagra Air Base," Palmas remarked, confirming he had spoken with Nikos Dendias, Greece’s Minister of National Defense.

The Hellenic Air Force has declared a three-day period of national mourning in response to the fatal crash.

This incident draws a stark contrast to a similar air show collision in Idaho in May, where two jets were involved, but both pilots managed to eject safely.
