Veteran defensive back Jamal Adams, a former first-round draft pick, experienced a significant knee injury on Sunday while competing for a roster position with the Minnesota Vikings. The incident occurred during a preseason matchup at MetLife Stadium, the very venue where Adams began his professional career with the New York Jets.

Just two weeks after joining the Vikings, Adams was forced to exit the game in the first half of their 13-10 victory due to the injury, raising immediate concerns about his future with the team.

On-Field Incident and Immediate Fallout

The injury took place as Adams was engaged in coverage against New York Giants receiver Calvin Austin III in the red zone. While sprinting to keep pace with the route, Adams unexpectedly fell to the turf. The injury appeared to be non-contact, and he remained down for an extended period.

Medical personnel promptly brought a cart onto the field to transport Adams back to the Vikings’ locker room for further evaluation.

During an in-game interview, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell addressed Adams’ knee injury, describing the initial assessment as “not good.” O’Connell conveyed his profound disappointment regarding the situation.

Adams' Path to Minnesota

Adams had signed with the Vikings just before the commencement of training camp on July 28. He understood that he would need to contend for a spot on the final roster for the upcoming season. His NFL journey began at MetLife Stadium, where the Jets selected him sixth overall out of LSU in the 2017 draft. Adams quickly became a standout player, earning two Pro Bowl selections in 2018 and 2019. In 2019, he was also named a First-Team All-Pro, a season in which he recorded 6.5 sacks, 75 tackles, two forced fumbles, one pick-six, and seven passes defended over 14 games.

Following his successful tenure with the Jets, Adams was traded to the Seattle Seahawks, where he spent the subsequent four seasons.
