James Carville Blasts Democrats for Ignoring Political Fundamentals Amid Graham Platner Scandal

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville recently delivered sharp criticism toward the Democratic Party, particularly regarding its handling of Graham Platner. Speaking on a podcast Wednesday, Carville contended that Democrats failed to adequately vet Platner, leading to current complications.
Democratic Party leaders and commentators who previously offered support for Platner amidst prior controversies, including contentious remarks and a tattoo with Nazi associations, have now distanced themselves following new sexual assault allegations.
Jenny Racicot, a resident of Maine, accused Platner of rape in recent interviews with Politico and CNN on Monday. She alleged that the Senate hopeful entered her home uninvited and while intoxicated nearly five years ago, subsequently forcing himself upon her. Platner has publicly denied these allegations.
Carville discussed the situation on Wednesday’s installment of "Politics War Room," framing it as a clear instance where a newer generation of Democrats neglected time-honored political acumen.
Carville's Critique of Modern Political Strategy
"The Platner rise was also a rise of a different attitude set," Carville stated. He described the key players as "consultants of like 27, 28 years old," who, in his view, were not constrained by traditional political guidelines. Initially, this approach appeared to yield success, with Carville noting, "It looked like they had some real success. I mean, they won. They knocked the incumbent governor — couldn’t even run — and they were kind of ahead in the polls."
Reflecting on the situation, Carville rhetorically questioned Maine Democrats: "If I look back on this … you didn’t vet your own candidate? You mean you didn’t know?" He emphasized the importance of thorough self-vetting in politics, recalling, "OK, we used to get our own oppo researchers to do an oppo research book on us. It’s the most important research you do."
Carville suggested that the rapid progression of Platner's campaign, with these issues being relatively recent, indicated a deliberate ignorance. "And so they took off in this campaign, and all of this was recent. It wasn’t way back in some other godforsaken time. I don’t think they knew. I don’t think they wanted to know," he asserted. He characterized the idea of conducting a candidate briefing to uncover potential issues as "so, so '80s," but concluded, "But, you know, there are certain rules in politics."
Shifting Stance: Carville's Earlier Defenses
This recent denunciation marks a significant departure from Carville’s earlier rhetoric. Just over a month prior, he had defended Platner amidst previous scandals.
At that time, Carville, who like Platner served in the United States Marine Corps, described him as "f---ed up. He’s been shot at. He’s a veteran. He’s a little bit weird. He’s an oysterman." Carville had then suggested, "Maybe we need a combat veteran right on that Senate floor who is f---ed up."
A notable aspect of his previous defense involved a comparison to World War II leaders. Carville argued, "And you know if Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill could work with Joseph Stalin — who, by the way, well, I'll tell you this, he was a bad guy, a really bad guy, all right — then I can overlook a tattoo."
However, one of Carville’s earlier defenses of Platner, who has since been repudiated by several former romantic partners, has been particularly ill-received in retrospect. "I don’t know how to tell The New York Times this, but boy puts hand on girl’s t---y, girl moves hand, boy walks away rejected and despondent. It happens," Carville had stated.
