A new chapter is on the horizon for basketball superstar LeBron James, who is poised to enter free agency for the third time in his career. The soon-to-be 42-year-old and the Los Angeles Lakers have officially confirmed his departure following an eight-season run with the team.
Reports emerged on Tuesday indicating that James had informed the Lakers of his decision to move on as he prepares for his remarkable 24th NBA season.
Following these announcements, the Lakers released a statement expressing gratitude, suggesting an amicable conclusion to their partnership.
"LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history. We will always be thankful for his eight years with the Lakers – including the title he led us to in 2020 under the toughest imaginable circumstances and the countless records he broke in purple and gold," stated Lakers owner Jeanie Buss. "We wish him all the best in the future, both on the court and off. He will always be a cherished part of the Lakers family."
James reciprocated the sentiment by sharing the Lakers' statement and adding his own message of appreciation.
"No, THANK YOU! Truly an honor to wear the (purple and gold) while trying to continuing the greatness & legacies that came before me!" he wrote. "Hope I made a few proud during my stint."
Reflecting on a Historic Tenure
During his time with the Lakers, James achieved numerous milestones, including securing his fourth NBA championship in 2020. He also extended his impressive All-Star streak to 22 consecutive selections and solidified his position as the NBA's all-time leading scorer, a record he continues to build upon.
The Lakers had reportedly expressed a desire for James to remain with the team. However, the four-time MVP was prepared to move forward, even with his son, Bronny James, on the roster. Their presence marked a historic first in the NBA, as they became the inaugural father-son duo to play as teammates and be active concurrently in the league. It is noteworthy that Bronny's salary, exceeding $2.3 million, became fully guaranteed just days prior on Monday.
Previous Chapters and Future Prospects
James initially joined the Lakers in 2018 after a second impactful stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he famously delivered a championship to the city, ending a 52-year title drought.
In his most recent season, James averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds. He played a crucial role in leading the Lakers to a playoff series victory, notably contributing while teammates like Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves were recovering from injuries.
As he enters free agency, the Golden State Warriors are currently considered a leading contender to acquire James. Such a move would transform the long-standing rivalry between James and Stephen Curry into one of the most star-studded and dynamic duos in the history of professional sports.
