The No. 1 Hurricanes' national title hopes take a hit with star wide receiver Malachi Toney sidelined for crucial weeks following an ankle injury sustained in practice.

Top-Ranked Miami Faces Significant Injury Setback as Star Receiver Malachi Toney Undergoes Ankle Surgery

The highly anticipated matchup between No. 1 Miami and Notre Dame on Saturday night has gained an unexpected layer of drama following news of a significant injury to Hurricanes' star wide receiver, Malachi Toney. The Heisman Trophy candidate is set to undergo ankle surgery, casting a shadow over Miami's national championship aspirations for the coming month.

Already considered underdogs for their game in South Bend, the Hurricanes now face the challenge of competing without Toney, who is their primary offensive playmaker alongside quarterback Darian Mensah. The injury occurred during practice on Wednesday, forcing Toney to leave the field for immediate medical evaluation.

Initial reports on Wednesday afternoon offered a glimmer of hope that the injury might not keep Toney out of Saturday's contest. However, as the day progressed, concerns escalated, indicating a potentially extended period of absence for the standout receiver.

"Malachi Toney sustained an injury during Wednesday’s practice and is currently undergoing further evaluation by the team’s medical staff," Miami stated in an official release earlier on Wednesday. "We will share additional updates as appropriate."

Following an MRI and X-ray examinations conducted Wednesday evening, it was determined that the star wide receiver would require surgery on his ankle. Sources close to the team indicated Toney suffered a high-ankle sprain and will undergo a procedure known as "TightRope" surgery. The Hurricanes organization is optimistic Toney could return for the College Football Playoff in approximately four to six weeks, though this timeline is acknowledged as hopeful.

Impact on Miami's Season and Betting Lines

The news of Toney's injury swiftly impacted betting markets, with multiple establishments adjusting the line for the Miami-Notre Dame game. By Wednesday evening, Notre Dame, initially a 5-point favorite, saw its lead expand to 6.5 points.

Toney's health is expected to be a dominant topic of discussion in college football circles over the next month, especially given the release of the initial College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday night. Entering this weekend's game, Toney had amassed an impressive 1,027 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns on 73 receptions, following a recent victory against North Carolina.

The upcoming weeks will reveal how the Hurricanes' offense adapts without its top receiver. This unfortunate development raises questions about Miami's potential standing in the CFP rankings should they experience a loss without their Heisman candidate on the field for an extended period. Similar situations have previously influenced committee decisions, such as Ohio State's ranking after losing quarterback Julian Sayin following a defeat to USC.

Notre Dame's Crucial Opportunity

For No. 11 Notre Dame, this Saturday's game against Miami presents a pivotal opportunity. The Fighting Irish were placed 11th in the first CFP poll of 2026, and their schedule has been criticized for a lack of signature victories. Their only win against a team currently ranked in the College Football Playoff top 25 was against BYU.

CFP chairman Hunter Yurachek commented on Notre Dame's resume: "But when you look at Notre Dame’s schedule and the wins that they have, vs. the teams that are ahead of them, they don’t have that signature win right now. They lost in their only Top-25 matchup at BYU. The next best win as on a neutral site against Wisconsin. They’ve a great opportunity in front of them this weekend at home vs. Miami to get that signature win that I think they need to move up in the rankings. But the committee is very impressed by them. They wouldn’t be 11th if we were not."

Following their contest with No. 1 Miami, Notre Dame's remaining schedule includes games against Boston College, SMU, and Syracuse. Among these opponents, only SMU currently holds a winning record. While Notre Dame's playoff standing was initially a central storyline for Saturday's clash, the focus has now shifted to how Miami will perform without its injured Heisman Trophy contender.
