A youth hockey player in Massachusetts has received an indefinite suspension following a severe on-ice incident that was captured on video and subsequently gained widespread attention online.
The event occurred during a game between the South Shore Kings and the Bay State Breakers at a hockey rink located in Foxboro.
The video footage shows an 11-year-old player from the Breakers skating toward an opponent before delivering a forceful, two-handed slash with his stick to the head of a Kings player.
Incident Draws Public Scrutiny and Investigation
The footage of the incident quickly circulated across social media platforms, leading many viewers to call for disciplinary action against the player involved.
In response, the team has implemented an indefinite suspension.
"The Breakers player has been suspended indefinitely from practices and games," a representative for the team stated. "Massachusetts Hockey is currently investigating the incident and will decide the length of the suspension, as they are the governing body for our sport."
Reports also indicate that the player responsible for the slash has sent a letter of apology to the victim. The injured player is reportedly in good condition following the incident.
