PGA Tour Champions Golfer Matt Gogel Suspended Six Months for Betting on Tour Events

Veteran golfer Matt Gogel, a member of the PGA Tour Champions, has received a six-month suspension from the organization. The disciplinary action stems from Gogel's placement of wagers on events within the PGA Tour circuit.

In a statement issued following the announcement, Gogel acknowledged making "small recreational wagers on golf" during 2024, asserting he was unaware at the time that such actions constituted a violation of tour policies.

I want to be clear that these wagers were not placed on regular PGA Tour events, PGA Tour Champions events or any tournament in which I participated. I would never knowingly violate the integrity of the game of golf. I made an honest mistake, and I look forward to playing in 2027 on the PGA Tour Champions.

The suspension for Gogel is scheduled to commence on Sunday and will remain in effect until February 22, 2027.

While the PGA Tour confirmed that Gogel did not place bets on any tournaments in which he competed, his actions were deemed a breach of the Tour’s integrity program, which explicitly forbids wagering on any PGA-sanctioned events.

Previous Cases and Career Overview

This is not the first instance of a golfer receiving a suspension for betting on PGA Tour events. In 2023, Korn Ferry Tour players Vince India and Jake Staiano faced similar penalties, with India suspended for six months and Staiano for three months, for engaging in comparable wagering activities on PGA Tour competitions.

Gogel, 55, achieved a single PGA Tour victory during his career, winning the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in 2002. Following his initial playing career on the Tour, he transitioned into broadcasting, working as a golf analyst for both The Golf Channel and CBS Sports.

Upon reaching the age of 50, Gogel joined the PGA Tour Champions, the senior professional golf circuit operated by the organization.

At the time of the suspension announcement, Gogel was ranked 20th in the Charles Schwab Cup points standings.
