Michael Douglas Offers Rare Update on Jack Nicholson's Retreat from Public Life

Veteran actor Michael Douglas recently shared insights into his longtime friend Jack Nicholson's decision to step away from the public spotlight, confirming the legendary performer has largely withdrawn from Hollywood.

Douglas, 82, reflected on his extensive career and various opportunities, including those he missed, while discussing his new memoir, "One Helluva Ride." When asked about individuals he never had the chance to collaborate with professionally, Douglas specifically mentioned Nicholson, stating he "would have liked to have acted with Jack."

"He's not working any more. He's well," Douglas conveyed. "He has disappeared. I know that."

The acclaimed "Wall Street" actor further elaborated, "I still see him, but he is fine. He is up there by his house and walking around in his slippers. It happens. He deserves it. I understand. He is a few years older than me, but I understand."

Nicholson, 89, has made rare public appearances in recent years. His last credited film role was in the 2010 movie "How Do You Know."

A Life Beyond the Limelight

In related news, Crystal Hefner, the widow of Hugh Hefner, recently revealed details about the inner workings of the Playboy Mansion and its array of famous visitors. During an episode of her "After the Mansion" podcast, Hefner, 40, recalled one prominent Hollywood figure known for his frequent visits to the Holmby Hills estate.

"I think a lot of celebrities came because they were just curious, and others used it as their personal country club," she explained. "They used to call it Jack Nicholson’s drive-thru at one point because he would drive up, grab some food or whatever else he could get there and leave."

Personal Accounts of the Playboy Mansion

Nicholson's daughter, Lorraine, has also shared her own experiences of the famous mansion, where she spent her childhood playing with Hefner's sons, Marston and Cooper. In a 2024 essay for Vanity Fair, Lorraine clarified the common misconception about her father's role in her visits.

People assume that my father took me to the Mansion, but they assume wrong. In fact, I can venture with confidence that I spent more time there than my father ever did.

Lorraine detailed her upbringing as the child of somewhat controversial parents, noting that the parents of her friends were "not so keen on letting their children come over to Jack Nicholson's house." She also provided insight into why her father's presence at the mansion was unique.

For the Hefners, I imagine it was nice to know that my father would never be like the other fathers, lingering a little too long after their children were dropped off, marveling, open-mouthed and fully clothed, at the way the refracted light danced on the roof of the grotto. They didn’t have to worry about these things, because my father was on the list. Which meant that he could show up at the Mansion, without an invitation, at any time.

Hugh Hefner's Obsession with Stardom

Crystal Hefner also acknowledged her late husband's deep fascination with Hollywood history and celebrity status. "One thing that mattered most to Hef was fame," she stated.

"Any celebrity was treated extremely well whenever they visited. He would have Bill Maher for chats, hang with Berry Gordy of Motown and then you’d see plenty of other people there. Buzz Aldrin, the original Catwoman." She added, "I always liked the non-womanizer celebrities. They always felt more safe."

Crystal began her relationship with Hugh Hefner at the age of 21. The couple became engaged in 2010 when she was 24 and Hefner was 84. Although they initially called off their wedding just days before the scheduled ceremony in 2011, they later reconciled. Crystal and Hefner married in 2012 and remained together until his passing in 2017 at the age of 91.

She explained that during Hefner's "final years," she made conscious efforts to "treat him with respect and dignity." Crystal expressed her desire for the media mogul to "still feel like he was respected and revered all the way until the very end."

"The entire mansion existed to cater to Hef's needs, women included," she revealed. "He would cry during the romantic scenes of the old films and just look over at me to help him. Or maybe it was a performance to encourage me to believe his feelings were real." She concluded, "Either way, I would wipe his tears and feel sad, too."
