British rock icon Phil Collins recently voiced his strong opinions on former President Donald Trump, describing his demeanor as "nasty" during an interview. The musician, who is slated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist in the coming weeks, also mentioned an unwritten song about the United States, tentatively titled "Fat People With Guns."
Collins' Critique of Trump's Demeanor
When directly asked about his thoughts on Trump, the 75-year-old artist stated, "not a lot," before elaborating on his criticisms of the former president's mannerisms. Collins contrasted Trump with previous leaders, whom he felt commanded respect even when their policies were disagreed upon.
His whole manner is unattractive. Even when he's saying he did nothing. You know, I think that presidents – because historically, presidents have been eloquent and elegant... but you feel like even if you don't agree with them, you still respect them. But when someone like Trump is as nasty as he is, you end up feeling dislike for him.
Pundit Eldridge commented on public sentiment regarding political discourse, noting that outside major metropolitan areas, most Americans primarily focus on elections during an election year. She explained that their priorities shift when rhetoric extends beyond specific party politics to broader generalizations about the nation.
That changes; however, when the rhetoric shifts from party-specific, political criticism, to more broad statements about America, in general.
Eldridge further advised that artists should exercise caution when making disparaging remarks about American culture, character, or capabilities, especially if they value commercial appeal. She emphasized that while such statements are freely made, they can incur significant financial consequences.
"Fat People With Guns": A Song Concept
Collins also touched upon his songwriting process, revealing a provocative phrase he had noted down for future development into a song. He identified this concept as "Fat People With Guns," explicitly stating it was "about America."
I've got a song that's waiting to be written called ‘Fat People with Guns,’ which is about America, you know, and I just write that phrase down so I don't forget it.
Observers have noted that when artists criticize American culture or values from a public platform, they can face considerable backlash. This reaction often stems from the perception that they are not merely critiquing a politician or policy, but rather the fundamental beliefs of their audience, who ultimately support their careers.
Speculation on Term Limits
Despite describing himself as "not a political person," Collins expressed apprehension about whether Trump might attempt to remain in power beyond the constitutional two-term limit. He voiced his concern:
I'm sure he's even tried, but it wouldn't surprise me if he just tries to overrule the two-term deal, you know, and American presidents can only serve two terms.
However, Trump himself addressed speculation about a potential third run in August, clarifying to reporters that the constitutional restriction on presidential terms is unambiguous. "I'd love to run, but the law is very strong," Trump stated. The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution explicitly limits individuals to two terms as president.
