A 19-year-old collegiate wrestling athlete from California tragically passed away on Sunday following a fall of approximately 400 feet during a hike in Yosemite National Park, according to park authorities and school officials.
Ryan George, a sophomore attending Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC), was exploring with companions near Illilouette Falls on September 20 when he lost his footing and slipped from the trail.
Tragic Incident in Yosemite
National Park Service law enforcement rangers subsequently located his remains in the canyon situated beneath Glacier Point Trail. Park officials adhere to a policy of not providing commentary on ongoing fatality investigations.
Before this tragic event, George had competed at the Dave Pacheco Invitational in Sacramento, where he secured second place individually and contributed to his team's overall second-place finish, just two days prior to the fall.
A Promising Athletic Career
George was a distinguished wrestler for SRJC’s Bear Cubs, competing in the 197-pound weight division. During his inaugural freshman season, he achieved an impressive 23-4 record and earned All-American honors by placing third overall at the 3C2A state championship tournament.
Prior to his enrollment at SRJC, George was a student at Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa. There, he captured the 2025 North Bay League title in the 215-pound category and secured second place at the North Coast Section championship. Beyond his athletic pursuits, George was planning his next steps, either to transfer to a four-year university program or to enroll in a fire academy with the goal of becoming a professional firefighter.

Yosemite National Park's search-and-rescue teams responded to approximately 250 incidents within the park in 2025, which marked a significant increase from 191 incidents recorded the preceding year. Ryan George is survived by his older sister, Jaida.
In the wake of his passing, teammates and members of the community have initiated an online fundraising campaign to assist with funeral costs and living expenses.
