The New Orleans Saints' challenging 1-4 beginning to the season has drawn concern not only from its dedicated fan base but also from within the organization's highest ranks. Principal owner Gayle Benson publicly articulated her dissatisfaction on Tuesday, just two days after the team suffered its third consecutive defeat.
Owner Voices Displeasure
Addressing attendees at the Greater New Orleans Quarterback Club luncheon, Benson declared the team’s current record "not acceptable to me." This sentiment follows a season where quarterback Tyler Shough demonstrated potential in his debut year, fostering hopes for the Saints to contend for the NFC South championship and pursue a playoff berth in their second season led by head coach Kellen Moore.
However, the team's path has proven challenging, marked by a narrow overtime loss to the Detroit Lions in the season opener. While the Saints secured a victory in Week 2, they subsequently fell to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 3, were decisively beaten by divisional foe Atlanta Falcons in Week 4, and lost 23-13 to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 5.
"And it falls short of what our fans truly deserve," Benson continued, acknowledging the palpable discontent. "I hear the frustration directed towards our team and our organization. It is not lost on me. Our fans invest their time and their hearts in the Saints. They are right to expect more than we have delivered."
In an approximately eight-minute address, Benson delivered an uncommon mid-season public assessment of the NFL franchise under her leadership. Her remarks unequivocally indicated that the team's present trajectory is unsustainable. At 79 years old, Benson seldom addresses the public regarding the Saints during the playing season; historically, her comments have been primarily encouraging when she has chosen to speak.
Calls for Accountability and Change
This week, her comments served as a direct challenge to Head Coach Kellen Moore and veteran general manager Mickey Loomis, while also including an acceptance of personal responsibility for the team’s ongoing difficulties.
"Kellen Moore and his coaches are responsible for preparing our players to perform," Benson stated. "Mickey Loomis and our football staff are responsible for building a roster capable of sustained success. Our players are responsible for their preparation and execution. I am responsible for holding this organization accountable."
Loomis has been a prominent figure in the Saints' front office for approximately 25 years, instrumental in the team's football operations. Just last year, Benson reportedly dismissed suggestions of Loomis's removal as "ridiculous," expressing her belief that he performed a "great job."
Reaffirming her commitment, Benson stated, "I am committed to making the decisions necessary to improve this team. Everyone in this organization understands the urgency. We must prepare better, execute consistently and correct the mistakes that are costing us the games."
Benson also specifically referenced the 45-24 defeat against Atlanta, a game that coincided with the 20th anniversary of the Superdome's reopening after its restoration following Hurricane Katrina. "Losing this year’s anniversary game to Atlanta truly disappointed me," she remarked.
She further emphasized her stance, stating she would not "accept this level of performance."
Looking Ahead: Urgent Need for Performance
Benson recognized that merely discussing improvements would not suffice; the Saints must demonstrate significant on-field progress to rebuild fan trust.
"Words will not restore our fans’ confidence," she concluded. "Our performance must do that."
The team now faces a critical two-game stretch, which includes an upcoming road game against the New York Giants in New Jersey, followed by an international contest against the Pittsburgh Steelers in France, marking the NFL's inaugural game in that country.
