WNBA Player Sophie Cunningham Addresses Transgender Athletes in Women's Sports

WNBA standout Sophie Cunningham has publicly clarified her perspective on the participation of transgender women in female athletic competitions. During a recent interview with ESPN, the popular teammate of Caitlin Clark addressed the contentious topic for the first time.

Clarifying Her Stance

Cunningham spoke about the negative reactions she has received regarding her views. "I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I'm like, 'I never once said that,'" she stated.

She further explained her motivation: "I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men."

The athlete also characterized her overall position as balanced, asserting, "I'm very much in the middle. I agree with things on both sides, disagree with things on both sides. And that's all I've ever said about my political beliefs. But people love to assume."

Previous Controversy and Public Statement

Cunningham had previously faced criticism from some circles in March 2022. This occurred after she shared a social media post by CBS Sports host Josh Pate, which commented on the debate surrounding former University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas's participation on the women's team.

Pate's original message, which Cunningham re-shared, read: "Female collegiate athletes deserve so much better than this."

The reaction to her re-share was significant, prompting Cunningham to release a formal statement at the time.

In her statement, she affirmed her commitment to inclusivity: "To my teammates, friends, family, supporters and fans, you know that I stand with all people, especially my fellow athletes. I do not judge, but support all races, religions, sexual preferences and gender equity. We all have a place in this world to compete and I hope we are able to grant everyone that opportunity fairly."

Growing Influence and Calls for Unity

Over the past year, Cunningham has emerged as one of the WNBA's more prominent figures, particularly gaining traction among conservative audiences.

Advocate Riley Gaines, known for her stance on preserving women's sports, has publicly called for prominent female athletes to unite on this issue. Gaines remarked, "Let this be a clarion call, not just to Simone, but to every, I think especially elite female athlete, professional female athlete, the likes of Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham, Serena Williams, to link arms."
