South Carolina Senate GOP Primary Heads to Runoff in Race to Succeed Late Senator Graham

Appointed Senator Darline Graham has advanced to a runoff election in the special Republican Senate primary in South Carolina. This contest seeks to fill the seat previously held by her elder sister, the late Senator Lindsey Graham.

With no candidate achieving more than 50% of the vote, Senator Darline Graham will compete against one other contender in the runoff, scheduled to take place in two weeks. The initial primary field included Representative Ralph Norman, Representative Russell Fry, former Governor and former Representative Mark Sanford, and businessman Mark Lynch. Tuesday's primary was held exactly one month after Senator Lindsey Graham's unexpected passing at the age of 71.

Presidential Endorsement's Influence on the Race

This nomination battle serves as the latest indicator of former President Donald Trump's significant influence within the Republican Party and the impact of his endorsements in primary elections. The former president had publicly backed Darline Graham, who was appointed by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster last month to serve the remainder of the current Senate term, which concludes at the end of the year.

During her vote on Tuesday, Graham articulated her campaign's objective, stating she is running to help "President Trump get his agenda passed."

Other prominent candidates, such as Representative Ralph Norman and Representative Russell Fry, both two-term congressmen and allies of former President Trump in the House, also highlighted their support for the president throughout their Senate campaigns. Norman had previously sought the GOP gubernatorial nomination this year in the race to succeed term-limited Governor McMaster, but was unsuccessful.

In contrast, Mark Sanford, recognized for his fiscally conservative stance and focus on budget issues, emphasized the nation's rising debt as a primary motivation for his Senate bid. Sanford had briefly mounted an unsuccessful long-shot challenge against Trump for the White House GOP nomination during the 2020 presidential primaries.

Businessman Mark Lynch was also part of the crowded Republican field. He had previously challenged the late Senator Lindsey Graham in a Republican Senate primary, losing by nearly 30 points.

Varying Success for Trump's Backing

The efficacy of a Trump endorsement has shown mixed results this cycle in the reliably Republican state of South Carolina. For instance, the former president supported Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette for the GOP gubernatorial nomination earlier this year, aiming to succeed the term-limited Governor McMaster.

Evette emerged as the leading vote-getter in that primary but subsequently lost the ensuing runoff election to South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson by a significant margin. Notably, days before the runoff, Trump, eager for a victory, extended his endorsement to Wilson in addition to Evette.

The victor of the upcoming Senate runoff election will be widely considered the front-runner in the general election against Democratic nominee Annie Andrews, a pediatrician.
