President Donald Trump confirmed Monday that he engaged in a telephone conversation with Britain's recently appointed Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, shortly after Burnham assumed office. The American president characterized the discussion as "very good" and indicated plans for a future meeting between the two leaders in the "not too distant future" to address matters of mutual concern.
During their inaugural call, the leaders touched upon the enduring relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom, alongside the challenges facing Prime Minister Burnham as he embarks on his tenure. President Trump extended a pledge of American assistance.
"We discussed many subjects, including the outstanding relationship we have had with the UK," President Trump stated. "The Prime Minister has got a big job ahead of him, but he will be able to do it and, of course, the U.S.A. will be there to help!"
Key Areas of Discussion
Beyond the broader U.S.-U.K. ties, the two heads of state delved into several specific topics. These included the North Sea oil industry, bilateral trade relations, the robust military alliance between their nations, and ongoing efforts to clear naval mines from the critical Strait of Hormuz waterway, according to President Trump.
Following the call, Prime Minister Burnham's office issued a statement, conveying the prime minister's anticipation of hosting President Trump in Manchester during a subsequent visit.
From London, Downing Street reported that President Trump provided an update on the evolving situation in the Middle East. Concurrently, Prime Minister Burnham reiterated the United Kingdom's steadfast commitment to ensuring the safe reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
"The Prime Minister outlined the UK’s commitment to securing the movement of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz to support global supply chains and drive down costs for businesses and families across the country," the British government office declared.
UK's Priorities and Domestic Agenda
Burnham further underscored that defense and national security would remain paramount for the United Kingdom, working in close collaboration with its international allies. On the domestic front, the new prime minister articulated his intention to pursue initiatives aimed at reindustrializing the nation, with the goal of fostering economic growth across various regions.
President Trump ultimately deemed the conversation a significant accomplishment.
"The call was interesting, and went very well. I wished Prime Minister Burnham, GOOD LUCK AND GODSPEED!" President Trump concluded.
A New Era and Past Interactions
Andy Burnham's ascension to power on Monday marks him as Britain's seventh prime minister within a decade. He has pledged to implement transformative changes for a country that has experienced frequent leadership transitions in recent years. Burnham succeeds Keir Starmer, who held the prime ministerial office for just over two years, having taken over in the summer of 2024.
Prior to Burnham assuming his current role, the two leaders had exchanged public criticisms. President Trump had previously characterized Burnham as "extremely liberal," while Burnham himself had openly expressed critical views of the American president.
