Tyrese Haliburton Expresses Frustration Over NBA Schedule After Long Injury Layoff
The Indiana Pacers star questions the league's decision for his highly anticipated return game following a significant Achilles injury.

The National Basketball Association recently unveiled its upcoming season schedule, a release that typically generates significant discussion among teams, players, and fans. This year, however, the new slate has drawn criticism from at least one prominent figure: Indiana Pacers standout Tyrese Haliburton.
Haliburton's last appearance on the court was in a pivotal Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals. During that intense matchup, where the Pacers ultimately fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder, Haliburton suffered a devastating Achilles tendon tear in his right leg. This severe injury, which occurred at the peak of his performance as one of the playoffs' most electrifying players, forced him to miss the entire subsequent 2025-26 season. After a prolonged absence and extensive rehabilitation, the former Iowa State star is now cleared and eager to make his return to competitive play.
Haliburton's Scheduling Grievances
The point guard's frustration stems from the circumstances surrounding his much-anticipated comeback game. Instead of a high-profile home opener or a nationally televised event, Haliburton's first game back is scheduled as an away contest in New Orleans, without national broadcast coverage.
He openly questioned this decision during an appearance on the "Number on the Board" podcast. "Name any other person that you compare to my level of a basketball player, wherever you have me ranked. If they tore their Achilles and missed 16 months, do you think that game would be on national television?" Haliburton asked rhetorically. He continued, pressing the point: "Do you think that game would be at home, if not on national television? Do you think that that game would be at New Orleans?"
While playing in New Orleans might draw some vocal opposition from local fans, Haliburton's core argument about the game's prominence appears to hold weight.
League Priorities and Perceived Slight
Crafting an 82-game schedule for each of the league's 30 franchises is an incredibly complex undertaking, making it challenging to satisfy every team and player. However, the return of a player of Haliburton's caliber, especially after missing an entire season following a deep playoff run where he was a central storyline, would seemingly warrant a more prominent slot in the schedule.
It's evident that the league often prioritizes other matchups for opening nights or national broadcasts. For instance, the season's inaugural night will feature LeBron James and the Philadelphia 76ers traveling to Madison Square Garden to face the defending champion New York Knicks, a marquee event designed to capture maximum viewership.
While some might view Haliburton's complaint as excessive, it is understandable why he and the Indiana Pacers might feel overlooked or undervalued in this particular scheduling decision.
