A remarkable three decades have unfolded swiftly, yet such a significant milestone is never achieved by chance.
It is timely to acknowledge the individuals viewers rarely encounter—those who enable daily broadcasts and provide on-air personalities with the complete assurance that the content delivered is both informative and engaging.
This confidence is paramount for anchors, hosts, and guests. It is essential to know that research is robust, technology functions seamlessly, visuals are accurate, and, should circumstances change instantly, the team offers unwavering support. Virtually every department within the organization is structured to facilitate this.
Outside of my on-air hours, I find genuine joy in my work routine, embracing the dynamic nature where plans can shift at any moment. This keeps me consistently alert and engaged.
My day typically commences with a security officer who enjoys declaring, "Talent is in the building!" precisely because he knows the term makes me uncomfortable. I usually blush, quicken my pace, and we share a laugh about it each morning.
Often, on my way to the office, I encounter a member of the custodial team, and we've established a tradition of exchanging "Morning morning!" greetings daily. We maintain a perfect streak, never missing this interaction.
The Core of Content Creation: Producers and Support Staff
Long before my arrival, producers are already immersed in their work. They begin their day hours before many others, conceptualizing what will make a compelling program—focusing not just on what will be said, but on the audience's overall experience. They meticulously search for the most current and impactful video footage to capture events, design graphics to clarify stories (I particularly appreciate well-crafted charts!), and craft scripts that captivate viewers and sustain their attention.
Then, without warning, they may need to completely overhaul the show's structure when breaking news demands a sudden change. The carefully planned broadcast is instantly discarded, and the team pivots to cover unfolding events nationally or internationally. This necessitates rapidly gathering and verifying information, sourcing appropriate visuals, connecting with relevant correspondents and guests, and helping us quickly comprehend what truly matters. Such a level of adaptability appears effortless only when the individuals executing it possess exceptional professional capabilities.
I recall an interview with an Afghan man who witnessed the Abbey Gate airport bombing in August 2021, following the withdrawal of troops by President Joe Biden. This individual bravely carried an injured child to safety before joining us on air. He expressed a profound sense of despair. While I typically maintain composure on camera, I felt on the verge of tears.
I will never forget the comforting voice of the line producer in my earpiece: "You’re OK. You’re OK." My tears subsided, and the interview continued.
Assistants serve as an essential lifeline, effectively managing our professional lives. They conduct research, maintain schedules, address challenges proactively, and anticipate potential issues. Their diverse talents are immense, and without their contributions, our operations would falter.
Our technology teams ensure real-time connectivity to breaking news and global events—a service often taken for granted until a technical issue arises.
Beyond the Technical: Personal Touches and Enduring Bonds
Naturally, there are those who contribute to our on-screen presentation. The wardrobe department exhibits a keen eye and is always ready with a pin or tape when needed. The hair and makeup team is, without a doubt, the finest in the industry. It's truly challenging to name another team of comparable caliber.
They also become trusted confidantes. I have collaborated with the same team for nearly 15 years, and they have become like family. While they ensure I am camera-ready at an hour when most would still be in their pajamas, they also discern when I have had a difficult night, require encouragement, need a laugh, or when it’s best to allow me a few minutes of quiet reflection. I eagerly anticipate seeing them daily and catching up.
Many other crucial roles deserve recognition: the directors skilled at capturing optimal reaction shots, the camera operators who never miss an angle, and the lighting technicians whose expertise we wish we could always have at our disposal.
There’s also a unique connection with stage managers, capable of conveying an entire message with a single glance. And, of course, the gratification of hearing chuckles from those who appreciate our jokes.
When reporting from the field, a different kind of operational magic unfolds. Our crews can transform a barn, a convention center, a parking lot, or virtually any location into a polished television set. Hollywood productions would be fortunate to employ such talented individuals.
Amid the significant logistical demands of covering elections or major breaking news, someone invariably remembers the smaller details: my preference for warm water in my cup; the suggestion of a yoga mat in my room if a prolonged stay is anticipated; or the consistent need for a footstool. These seemingly minor considerations make a substantial difference, conveying a message of understanding and support: "We know you. We’ve got you. Go do your job."
This extensive support extends well beyond the studio walls. Our media relations team actively promotes our endeavors, shares our narratives, and, when necessary, staunchly defends us. They are integral to our efforts, and their presence is deeply valued.
Numerous other individuals whose names never appear on screen also contribute significantly.
These are more than just professional colleagues. Over many years, they evolve into cherished friends. Throughout this journey, there has been an abundance of laughter.
I have also relied on this group for solace during some of life’s most challenging moments, including the passing of my father earlier this year. And I have had the privilege of sharing in their joys as well—celebrating marriages, the arrival of children, and now, after all these years, even grandchildren.
This is the true essence of longevity: one doesn't merely work alongside people; a significant portion of life is lived in their company.
We have collectively celebrated, mourned, adapted, and persevered through several challenging periods, emerging stronger as a result.
Having been with this organization for nearly 17 years, I still feel relatively new compared to the foundational members who established this network and shaped it into what it is today.
Thirty years on, technology has advanced, platforms have evolved, and methods of news consumption have changed. Yet, excellence continues to hinge on the caliber of people and the strength of our organizational culture.
Without their singular dedication to accuracy, we would not have achieved our leading position nor sustained operations for three decades. Because of their efforts—coupled with visionary leadership from the top, including our founders—I hold immense confidence in the future years.
While the cameras may focus on those of us on screen, the individuals just outside that frame are the fundamental reason the broadcast continues.
