Madonna's Triumphant Return to the VMA Stage
Madonna kicked off the show with an electrifying performance, joined by Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX. This marked her first VMA performance in 23 years. She graced the stage with Sabrina Carpenter for a rendition of "Bring Your Love" and later performed "Danceteria" with Charli XCX. The opening act also saw special appearances from Julia Garner, Sombr, Debi Mazur, and Seth Rogen.

Recounting a memorable moment from that first performance, Madonna shared, "I had a little problem with my shoes and I dove onto the stage to try and make myself look cute and sexy and like I meant to do it." She revealed that this impromptu move inadvertently exposed her backside. "In those days, butt cheeks were not hanging out. I just want to remind you. And I went backstage feeling really proud of myself, and my manager told me that my career was over."
Looking back at her recent journey, the artist emphasized her dedication over the past year and a half to "finding myself, believing in myself, and really making the music that I wanted to make." She asserted, "I mean, that really is the definition of being an artist. And my hope for all of you here tonight is that you spend the next year, or the next 10 years, or put the rest of your life doing the same, finding yourself and believing in yourself."
Recognition for Dance and Collaboration
Madonna also received the Best Dance award for "Confessions II - The Film." Accepting the award alongside presenters Charli XCX and Troye Sivan, she spoke passionately about her connection to dance. "I came to New York to be a dancer and dance is where everything happened for me in my life," she remarked. "I came to life on the dance floor, I fell in love with people on the dance floor, and I lost many people I loved on the dance floor. [And] dance brings everybody together. We’re all equal on the dance floor."
Her collaborative work with Sabrina Carpenter on "Bring Your Love" also earned them the Moon Person for Best Collaboration.
Tributes, Swift's Wins, and Other Highlights
A poignant moment of the night was Kacey Musgraves' tribute to the late Dolly Parton, who passed away on August 25 at the age of 80. The tribute commenced with a video of Parton singing "I Will Always Love You." Musgraves then appeared on stage in a pre-taped segment, taking over the song while channeling Parton's signature style in a hot pink gown and voluminous hair.
Taylor Swift was another major award recipient, winning Video of the Year for her self-written and directed music video, "The Fate of Ophelia." Swift dedicated this significant win to Parton. She was also honored with the inaugural Artist Director Honors, presented by her friend Dakota Johnson, and received the award for Best Direction for her work on "Opalite." Swift further premiered her new music video for "Patient Zero," featuring Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell.
The 2026 VMAs additionally paid tribute to Nirvana, bestowing upon the band the Video Vanguard Award. The show featured performances by Lisa, Sienna Spiro, Bruno Mars, Sombr, and Shaboozey. Sienna Spiro was named Best New Artist, while Lisa earned the Best Pop Award.
